Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has rejected allegations that he supported President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 election campaign for personal gain. El-Rufai was a key figure among Northern governors in the All Progressives Congress (APC) who advocated for a Southerner to succeed former President Muhammadu Buhari before the party’s primary.
Tinubu ultimately emerged as the APC candidate and won the 2023 election, defeating Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP). However, El-Rufai has recently been at odds with the Tinubu administration and the APC, leading to frequent exchanges on X between him and some presidential aides.
A user on X, @realYusufTukur, alleged that Tinubu and his allies had sought El-Rufai’s support before the election and praised him, but later claimed he did not back the president. El-Rufai responded by stating that he had no personal expectations from his political actions, adding that the unfolding situation was simply human nature.
“We did what we did for God, country, and party, expecting nothing in return. What is unfolding is merely another life experience and part of human nature. We have moved on, but their conscience won’t let them sleep well. Thanks anyway,” El-Rufai posted.
El-Rufai also emphasized his commitment to transparency and honesty in governance, saying, “Truly, I don’t know how to pretend. Being a Nollywood actor in governance is for some others, not for some of us”.
