In a decisive move to safeguard public health, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit pharmaceutical products, unwholesome processed foods, and unsafe cosmetics valued at ₦4.7 billion in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. This large-scale destruction underscores the agency’s ongoing fight against substandard and potentially harmful consumer products across Nigeria.
The exercise, conducted in collaboration with the Nigerian Customs Service, marks the first joint zonal product destruction initiative in the South-South region. The agency’s leadership reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring that only safe and approved products reach Nigerian consumers.
Massive Crackdown on Expired and Fake Products
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Christiana Adeyeye, represented by the South-South Zonal Director, Chukwuma Olugbo, disclosed that the agency’s enforcement operations recently uncovered several warehouses in Port Harcourt stocked with expired alcoholic beverages. These products had been revalidated and illicitly reintroduced into the market, posing serious health risks to unsuspecting consumers.
Further intelligence-led operations, conducted in July 2024, led to significant seizures of substandard medical products, unregistered cosmetics, and imported vegetable oil that lacked essential Vitamin A fortification. The confiscations took place across multiple locations, including Delta State, reinforcing NAFDAC’s commitment to eliminating dangerous goods from circulation.
Strengthening Consumer Protection and Public Safety
The destruction of these harmful products serves as a stern warning to counterfeiters and unscrupulous traders. Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that NAFDAC remains resolute in its mission to rid Nigeria of fake drugs, unsafe cosmetics, and adulterated food products. The agency continues to intensify its surveillance and enforcement efforts, ensuring that Nigerians are protected from the dangers of substandard consumables.
NAFDAC’s recent actions demonstrate a proactive approach to regulatory enforcement, highlighting the importance of consumer safety. The agency urges the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious products or activities to the relevant authorities to aid in the fight against counterfeit goods.
Collaborative Efforts in Regulatory Enforcement
The success of this operation also reflects the strong inter-agency collaboration between NAFDAC and the Nigerian Customs Service. This partnership is crucial in preventing the entry and distribution of unapproved and potentially hazardous products in the market.
Consumers are encouraged to purchase their medical and cosmetic products from accredited suppliers and ensure that items have NAFDAC approval to guarantee their safety and efficacy.
