The Ebonyi State government, led by Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has approved the release of ₦551,502,142.84 for the sponsorship of 46 prospective pilgrims for the 2025 Hajj activities. This decision was made during the Ebonyi State Executive Council meeting on February 7, 2025.
According to the Honourable Commissioner for Information in Ebonyi State, Jude Chikadibia Okpor, the government’s approval demonstrates its commitment to religious tolerance and its desire to support Muslim pilgrims. Okpor emphasized that Nigeria is a secular state and that Ebonyi has become a peaceful home for all, where religious tolerance is encouraged and practiced.
The approved funds will cover the financial implication of ₦8,784,085.59 per beneficiary. Additionally, the council has resolved to ask all council chairmen to consider sponsoring one person from each council area for the 2025 Hajj, aiming to broaden indigenous participation.
This development comes amidst reports of hunger and killings in Ebonyi State, sparking concerns about the government’s priorities.
