Los Angeles—Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Tems has once again made history, securing her second Grammy Award at the 67th Recording Academy Awards. She took home the prestigious Best African Music Performance award for her hit single Love Me Jeje, solidifying her position as a leading figure in the global music scene.
The category was fiercely competitive, featuring some of the biggest names in Afrobeats. Tems triumphed over fellow Nigerian superstars Burna Boy, Asake, and Wizkid, who were nominated for their collaborative track MMS. Other notable contenders included Yemi Alade and Davido, who teamed up with Lojay on Chris Brown’s Sensational. Interestingly, Chris Brown was the only non-Afrobeats artist in the category, highlighting the genre’s growing influence on the global stage.
Taking to the stage to accept her award, Tems delivered an emotional speech, dedicating the win to her mother in honor of her birthday. “Wow, dear God. Thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team,” she began.
“Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday, and this is her first Grammys. I just want to thank you, ma, because she has really done a lot for me and my brother.”
With heartfelt gratitude, she continued, “Happy birthday, mum. And I want to thank my team—Muyiwa, Wale, my beautiful stylist, and lovely girls… I love you guys. Thank you so much. To God be the glory. Honestly, He has changed my life so much.”
