Telcos Warn NLC Against Actions That Could Cripple Telecom Sector

Telecommunications operators in Nigeria have cautioned the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) against proceeding with its planned nationwide protest scheduled for February 4, warning that it could severely impact the already struggling telecom sector. The operators, represented by their Chief Executive Officers and the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, expressed concerns that the protest could exacerbate existing challenges within the industry.

Speaking at a town hall meeting held on Saturday evening in Victoria Island, Adebayo stressed that the telecom sector is facing critical issues that require careful management rather than actions that could destabilize it further. He remarked, “I have no doubt that the Labour union would not want to be remembered as the undertaker of a sector that is vital to Nigeria’s economy.”

Adebayo appealed to the NLC to reconsider its stance and engage in constructive dialogue with stakeholders to address the underlying issues. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to revive the sector, noting that disruptions could have far-reaching consequences for businesses, government operations, and the general public.

While acknowledging the NLC’s right to advocate for workers’ rights, Adebayo urged the union to consider the broader implications of its actions on national development and economic stability.

The telecom industry, a critical pillar of Nigeria’s digital economy, continues to grapple with infrastructural deficits, high operating costs, and regulatory challenges. Stakeholders hope that ongoing dialogues will lead to solutions that support both workers’ interests and the sector’s sustainability.
