The Kano State government has allocated ₦2.5 billion for quarterly mass weddings across its 44 local government areas in 2025. This was revealed by the State’s Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Musa Shanono, during a briefing on the breakdown of the 2025 budget, which was passed into law by the State House of Assembly on January 31. According to Shanono, the government plans to spend ₦91.32 billion on governance and service delivery programs, including the mass wedding initiative. He emphasized that this commitment aims to promote responsibility, openness, human rights, and a fair society for sustainable growth while improving citizens’ living standards.
Shanono further detailed other allocations within the budget. ₦1 billion has been set aside for Ramadan feeding, ₦955 million for manpower and household surveys, including out-of-school children statistics, and ₦1.049 billion for purchasing printing machines, rehabilitating water systems, and equipping the Government Printing Press library. Additionally, ₦267.6 million is earmarked for infrastructure provision, Islamic calendar production, and support for Islamic Da’wah programs and new converts. Other allocations include ₦589 million for security research, empowerment development, and street begging intervention, and ₦200 million for office furniture procurement, maintenance of the accountant-general’s office, and PFM software development.
The Commissioner highlighted that the approved 2025 budget totals ₦719.76 billion, marking a 31% increase (₦170.6 billion) from the initial ₦549.16 billion proposed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The recurrent expenditure stands at ₦262.67 billion, while the capital expenditure is ₦457.08 billion. Shanono noted that the 2025 budget is 65% higher than the 2024 budget, reflecting an increase of ₦282.42 billion.
This budget underscores the government’s focus on social welfare, infrastructure development, and economic empowerment, aiming to address critical issues such as poverty, education, and security while fostering sustainable growth in Kano State.
