Ambode’s Political Resurgence and Seyi Tinubu’s Emerging Trajectory: A Strategic Path to Lagos 2027

In the ever-evolving socio-political landscape of Nigeria, certain key elements play a pivotal role in shaping the ambitions of political contenders. Among these are vision, character, commitment, and unwavering consistency in pursuing purpose. These factors, when anchored on principles of humility, integrity, and sincerity of purpose, set the foundation for enduring political influence and governance success.

For former Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, the buzz around his potential return to the state’s highest office in 2027 has gained significant momentum. Having previously served as governor and left an indelible mark, the notion of his comeback is both compelling and complex. However, his path to reclaiming the seat is not without hurdles. One of the most intriguing variables in this evolving equation is the rising political presence of Seyi Tinubu, the enterprising son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Seyi Tinubu, known for his sharp political acumen and business ingenuity, has been instrumental in rallying Nigeria’s youth behind his father’s “Renewed Hope” agenda. His strategic efforts during the 2023 presidential election earned him widespread recognition as a formidable force in political mobilization. Given this trajectory, some analysts speculate on the likelihood of Seyi Tinubu making a gubernatorial bid in Lagos. However, a more strategic pathway could involve consolidating his father’s political influence by supporting Ambode’s return in 2027, thereby strengthening the party’s grip on Lagos while preparing himself for a future role—perhaps in 2031.

Ambode’s Legacy: A Blueprint for Lagos’ Progress

One of the strongest arguments in favor of Ambode’s return is his exemplary track record during his first term. A seasoned economist and administrator, his tenure witnessed transformational strides across multiple sectors—transportation, infrastructure, security, education, healthcare, and entertainment—leaving a lasting imprint on Lagos State.

A major highlight of his administration was his aggressive approach to resolving the city’s notorious traffic congestion. Landmark projects such as the construction of the Jubilee Flyover Bridges in Abule-Egba, Ajah, and Pen Cinema significantly improved the flow of movement in key areas. His administration also embarked on the rehabilitation of over 500 roads across the five administrative divisions of Lagos, with Alimosho Local Government Area particularly benefiting from well-paved roads and modern drainage systems. The redesign of Ojodu-Berger further alleviated traffic gridlocks that previously resulted in frequent altercations between transporters and commuters.

Another testament to Ambode’s developmental blueprint was the massive upgrade of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport road, expanding it from a four-lane to a ten-lane highway with additional ramps and flyovers. The Oshodi Transport Interchange, another flagship project, introduced a modern transportation hub featuring three terminals, 18 lifts, and a comprehensive CCTV surveillance system. These infrastructural investments not only enhanced urban mobility but also significantly improved the security and aesthetic appeal of Lagos.

Strengthening Security and Public Services

Understanding the critical importance of security in a densely populated metropolis, Ambode allocated N6.6 billion to support security agencies, reinforcing their operational capabilities. His administration also enacted the Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps law, aimed at enhancing community-level security. Moreover, the Lagos State Properties Protection Law was introduced to curb the activities of land grabbers, thereby protecting property rights and fostering a more secure business environment.

In healthcare, Ambode’s administration upgraded the Ayinke House maternity center, transforming it from an 80-bed facility into a state-of-the-art 170-bed specialist center. The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) complex was also enhanced with the addition of a medical emergency helipad, ensuring faster response times in critical situations. Notably, Lagos also became home to Nigeria’s first-ever DNA forensic center, an initiative that bolstered forensic investigations and criminal justice processes in the state.

Food Security, Transportation, and Entertainment Growth

Ambode’s administration played a crucial role in bolstering Lagos’ food security with the introduction of the Lake Rice project, a collaboration with Kebbi State. This initiative significantly reduced the cost of rice, ensuring affordability for Lagosians while promoting local agricultural sustainability.

In the transportation sector, his Bus Reform Initiative introduced 5,000 new buses, with 434 deployed along the ever-busy Ikorodu corridor, offering commuters a more reliable and efficient alternative to informal transport systems. Additionally, the expansion of water transportation was prioritized, offering Lagosians multiple commuting options to decongest roads.

Recognizing the importance of arts and entertainment in fostering social cohesion, Ambode’s administration spearheaded the development of the Eko Theatre project. The initiative led to the construction of modern theatres in Alimosho, Badagry, Ikeja, and Epe, offering a vibrant platform for cultural and creative expressions.

A Political Comeback in 2027?

With the 2027 gubernatorial elections on the horizon, political pundits are keenly watching whether Ambode can successfully navigate the intricacies of Lagos politics to secure another term. His previous tenure, marked by remarkable achievements, has cemented his reputation as a competent leader who prioritizes sustainable development.

However, the political dynamics in Lagos remain complex. While his performance speaks for itself, his ability to secure the party’s ticket remains a significant hurdle. The role of Seyi Tinubu in this equation is equally critical. If Seyi channels his influence towards reinforcing his father’s political structure at the federal level, he could pave the way for Ambode’s return. This, in turn, would allow Ambode to further consolidate Lagos’ progress, setting the stage for a seamless transition of power to the next generation of leaders.

Reflecting on his past governance approach, Ambode once remarked: “I ask you to believe again and together, let us achieve more… to build a secure and prosperous Lagos State driven by a vibrant economy, supported by quality service, equity, and justice.”

If the political climate aligns in his favor, Ambode’s return to Lagos State’s leadership could signal a new chapter of strategic governance and infrastructural excellence, laying a solid foundation for future leadership transitions. As the events leading to 2027 unfold, one thing remains clear: Lagos deserves a leader who has both experience and vision to drive its transformation to greater heights.
