Timileyin Ajayi Pleads Not Guilty to NYSC Member’s Death, Trial Set for March

Timileyin Ajayi, the alleged killer of Salome Adaidu, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, pleaded not guilty to the charge of culpable homicide during his arraignment on Monday, January 27, 2025. The case, which has drawn significant public attention, is being heard at Court 2, Lafia, before Justice Simeon Aboki of the Nasarawa State Judiciary.

Ajayi was arrested by the Nasarawa State Police Command on January 12, 2025, following investigations into the tragic death of Adaidu at his residence. The police subsequently charged him with culpable homicide, an offense punishable by death under the law.

The Officer-in-Charge of Legal Affairs at the Nasarawa State Police Command, Stanley Nwaforagu, provided insights into the court proceedings after the arraignment. He stated, “Today, January 27, 2025, the defendant, Mr. Timileyin Ajayi, was formally arraigned on a one-count charge of culpable homicide punishable with death. His plea was taken, and he entered a plea of not guilty. The court has adjourned the case to March 17 to 20 for trial.”

Nwaforagu expressed confidence in the evidence gathered by the police, asserting that they have a strong case against the defendant. “We have overwhelming evidence to sustain the charge, and we are optimistic that justice will be served. The court’s decision to expedite the trial is a welcome development,” he added.

On the other side of the courtroom, Ajayi’s defense counsel, Joseph Tukur, assured his client of robust representation throughout the trial. Tukur emphasized that his role as a defense attorney is to ensure that the prosecution adheres to the legal standard of proving the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

“Today’s arraignment marks the first step in this legal process,” Tukur explained. “It is not my duty to prove innocence or guilt; my responsibility is to hold the prosecution accountable and ensure the law is followed.”

When asked about his client’s earlier comments regarding the case, Tukur reiterated, “As a defense counsel, I will focus on ensuring a fair trial. The burden of proof lies with the prosecution.”

The court’s decision to prioritize an accelerated trial underscores the gravity of the case, with both parties preparing for the scheduled March hearings.

Salome Adaidu’s death has sparked widespread concern, with many Nigerians calling for justice for the young NYSC member whose life was tragically cut short.

Hobnob News will continue to monitor and report developments in this case as the legal battle unfolds, providing updates on one of the most closely watched cases in recent times.
