Yomi Adetula, a key witness in a libel lawsuit against the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), was brutally murdered by suspected assassins in Idi-Iroko, Ogun State. Adetula, who was the Director of Anti-Arms Smuggling at the Social Orientation and Safety Corps, was attacked while in his church on Sunday morning.
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen, armed with weapons including hammers and machetes, shot Adetula but when the bullets didn’t penetrate, they inflicted fatal wounds on him. The attack appears to be a targeted killing, with residents suggesting that the assailants were hired assassins.
Adetula’s murder comes as he was set to testify in the libel lawsuit filed by IBD Dende against FIJ. The lawsuit stems from an undercover investigation and documentary by FIJ exposing smuggling activities, as well as tweets by FIJ’s founder, ‘Fisayo Soyombo. The brutal killing has raised concerns about the safety of witnesses and the integrity of the judicial process.
