A victim who recorded her own violent assault has been praised for her bravery, as a man was sentenced for a brutal attack in Nottingham.
Timilehin Olatunji, 35, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of rape. The crime took place in the early hours of 29 September 2024, at a property in Nottingham. The victim’s quick thinking enabled authorities to gather crucial evidence that would lead to the offender’s conviction.
During the assault, the woman managed to use an app on her mobile phone to secretly record the audio of Olatunji’s violent attack. Her ability to do so was instrumental in the case, with detectives describing the recorded evidence as deeply disturbing and central to securing justice.
After the attack, the victim was able to escape from the property and immediately reported the incident to specially trained officers who support survivors of such traumatic crimes. Olatunji was arrested shortly thereafter.
At Nottingham Crown Court on 15 January, Olatunji was sentenced for his crimes. In addition to his 10-year prison term, Olatunji was added to the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and was made the subject of an indefinite restraining order, designed to protect the victim from further harm.
Judge Michael Auty condemned Olatunji’s actions, calling the attack “despicable and vile” and behavior “beyond rational understanding.” He further stated, “You took it upon yourself to rape her in the most brutal, sadistic and cruel way imaginable.”
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Emily Bucklow from Nottinghamshire Police expressed her admiration for the victim’s courage, highlighting the unique nature of the case.
“The recorded evidence of Olatunji’s horrific assault made this case particularly harrowing for all the officers who worked on it,” Detective Constable Bucklow said. “It is one of the most upsetting things I have had to listen to in my policing career and only enhances my admiration for this victim’s bravery.”
She went on to praise the victim for her strength and resilience in the aftermath of such a traumatic experience. “I would also like to commend her for the courage she showed following Olatunji’s arrest and dignity during the subsequent court proceedings. He subjected her to a violent, degrading and sustained ordeal, but she has shown immense bravery to help us bring him to justice.”
Detective Constable Bucklow expressed hope that the sentencing would bring some closure to the victim and help her find a sense of peace after the traumatic ordeal. “I hope the sentence handed down will at least provide some closure to what must have been an acutely distressing period of her life.”
Moreover, Bucklow hopes that the case serves as an encouragement to other survivors of sexual violence. “I also hope the sentencing of Olatunji will encourage other victims of rape and serious sexual assault to have the confidence to come forward and report offenders. Our experienced officers are here to help the victims of appalling crimes like this.”
The case has drawn attention to the bravery of the victim, who managed to document the assault in real time. It has also highlighted the role of specialized police teams in investigating such sensitive cases and providing support to survivors.
Olatunji’s actions have been condemned as some of the most brutal seen in recent memory, and the sentence reflects the severity of his crime. The victim’s courage in both capturing the evidence and helping authorities secure his conviction will undoubtedly inspire others to seek justice in the face of similar horrors.
Detective Constable Bucklow concluded with a reminder of the importance of support for survivors: “We are committed to helping those affected by such horrendous crimes, and we encourage anyone who has been victimized to come forward with confidence, knowing that they will be supported by our officers throughout the process”
