Customs Seizes 397 Vehicles Worth N5.64bn in 2024 – CGC Adeniyi

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) reported a remarkable enforcement year in 2024, with the seizure of 397 vehicles valued at N5.64 billion. This accomplishment underscores the service’s commitment to enforcing import regulations and safeguarding government revenue.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, highlighted the service’s efforts in curbing smuggling and other illicit activities. “The service recorded significant seizures of other restricted items, including 3,785 bales of textiles valued at N945 million, 183,527 bags of rice, and various quantities of footwear, beverages, and other consumer goods, protecting local industries and supporting the government’s economic diversification agenda,” Adeniyi said.

He further elaborated on the vehicle seizures, stating, “The service also recorded 397 seizures of vehicles valued at N5.64 billion, as we continue to enforce import regulations and protect government revenue.”

Crackdown on Fuel Diversion and Smuggling

Adeniyi also detailed the outcomes of Operation Whirlwind, an initiative launched earlier this year in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority under the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited. The operation led to the confiscation of 1,716,656 liters of petroleum products from individuals attempting to divert them to neighboring countries.

“These enforcement activities have resulted in 55 arrests of suspects who are currently under investigation. This demonstrates our determination to dismantle the criminal networks responsible for these illegal activities,” Adeniyi stated.

Leveraging Technology for Enhanced Enforcement

In addition to physical enforcement, the Customs Service is investing in technological advancements to bolster its capabilities. Adeniyi revealed plans to integrate geospatial technology and other state-of-the-art tools into their operations.

“These technological advancements, coupled with capacity building and improved intelligence-gathering mechanisms, will significantly enhance our surveillance and enforcement activities. Integrating these modern solutions with our existing frameworks represents a strategic investment in the future of Customs enforcement,” he said.

Aligning with National and International Goals

The Customs boss emphasized that these initiatives align with both national security objectives and international obligations. “Our comprehensive approach positions the NCS as a critical actor in Nigeria’s security architecture while continuing to facilitate legitimate trade,” Adeniyi noted.

He concluded by reaffirming the service’s dedication to remaining proactive in addressing emerging threats and ensuring that Nigeria’s borders are secure. The NCS, under Adeniyi’s leadership, is demonstrating its resolve to not only combat smuggling and other illicit trade practices but also to support economic growth and national security through innovative and impactful enforcement strategies.
