The Federal Ministry of Power plans to allocate N8 billion in 2025 to educate Nigerians about the importance of timely electricity bill payments.
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed this during the ministry’s budget defense before the National Assembly joint committee on power on January 13.
Adelabu stated that the initiative aims to use social, digital, and print media to reach all Nigerians. He emphasized the need for citizens to understand that the power sector is a shared national resource requiring collective care and responsibility.
“We are a people of over 200 million strength. So we need to go through all the loopholes, through social media, through digital media, through the print media, to actually orientate and do this advocacy. So we have N8 billion,” Adelabu explained.
Highlighting the importance of the advocacy, the minister said many Nigerians need to be educated about the value of protecting power assets, discouraging electricity theft, and paying bills consistently.
“In terms of advocacy, we believe that our people need to be re-educated. They need to be re-orientated to know that the power assets are national assets, and we should all jointly own it.
Our people need to know that they should avoid power theft. When they see something, they must say something. Our people need to know that they must pay their bills regularly. All these need to be passed across. We believe that the power sector needs to do a lot of advocacy, re-orientation and re-education of our people,” Adelabu added.
The advocacy project is part of broader efforts to address challenges in the power sector and ensure its sustainability through increased public awareness.
