The Lagos State Police Command has made notable strides in its efforts to address security challenges, recovering stolen weapons and tackling abduction cases. Commissioner of Police Ishola Olanrewaju revealed these developments during a press briefing at the state command headquarters on Saturday.
Recovery of Rifles Stolen During #EndSARS Protests
In a significant breakthrough, the police recovered three rifles stolen from its armoury during the #EndSARS protests. The recovery was made on December 27, 2024, following a tip-off about a suspicious bag found on the rooftop of a building at Idunsagbe Street in the Lagos Island area.
Commissioner Olanrewaju stated, “Upon investigation, two AK-47 rifles with breach numbers 52573 and 4004855, and a K2 assault rifle (07003-853) were discovered in the bag. These rifles, which lacked magazines and ammunition, were confirmed to be part of the weapons looted from the Ebutte Ero Police Station during the protests.”
The commissioner noted that the rifles were in varying states of disrepair but had since been refurbished by the command’s professional gun handlers. “These weapons have been returned to the division they were stolen from, ensuring that they are once again operational for security purposes,” he added.
Tackling Abductions: 14-Year-Old Girl Rescued
The commissioner also disclosed a case involving the abduction and impregnation of a 14-year-old girl, whose family had been extorted under the guise of ransom payments.
“The girl, who had been lured away, contacted her parents demanding money for her release. Investigations led to the arrest of two suspects on Friday night,” Olanrewaju explained.
He described the case as part of a broader trend involving what he termed “constructive kidnappings.” These cases, he noted, often involve individuals being baited with promises of luxury. “Many of these victims are lured with flight tickets to Lagos and accommodated in upscale hotels, unaware that it’s a trap,” he said.
Ongoing Efforts and Achievements
The police have rescued 16 women from similar situations, highlighting a pattern of exploitation and deception. Commissioner Olanrewaju used the platform to educate the public about the risks associated with such cases, urging young women to exercise caution and avoid falling prey to such schemes.
Additionally, the commissioner lamented the loss of three police officers in 2024, emphasizing the risks law enforcement officers face while ensuring public safety.
Call for Vigilance
The Lagos State Police Command continues to appeal to residents to report suspicious activities and cooperate with law enforcement efforts. “We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents in Lagos,” Olanrewaju concluded.
