Hon. Chijioke Chukwu, the former Minority Leader of the Abia State House of Assembly and a close ally of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has refuted claims that the Deputy Speaker is scheming to unseat Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents the Abia North Senatorial District, in 2027. Speaking with journalists in Umuahia, Hon. Chukwu attributed the rumors to the actions of an aide associated with the former governor, calling the speculation baseless and aimed at tarnishing the image of the Deputy Speaker.
Chukwu alleged that the false narratives were deliberately crafted by an aide of the former governor and were released with the tacit approval of the former governor himself. He expressed his disappointment, labeling the move as “mischievous” and designed to create unnecessary tension within the political landscape.
“The Deputy Speaker believes in destiny and the will of God. He does not engage in rumor-mongering or speculative politics. He is a focused and grassroots politician who understands the intricacies of leadership and public service,” Chukwu said.
Rumors Dismissed as Political Mischief
Chukwu emphasized that no aide affiliated with the Deputy Speaker made any statements or comments suggesting a political challenge against Senator Orji Uzor Kalu. Instead, he maintained that the allegations were fabricated by an aide from Igbere, who is closely associated with the former governor.
“I can tell you categorically that the publication was crafted with the explicit knowledge of the former governor. As someone who has worked with both the former governor and the Deputy Speaker, I am well-acquainted with their approaches and can confidently identify who is responsible for this,” Chukwu added.
The former Minority Leader urged the public to disregard the misleading narrative, asserting that the Deputy Speaker is fully focused on his legislative responsibilities and not preoccupied with political ambitions for 2027.
Too Early for 2027 Speculations
Chukwu dismissed the timing of the rumors as premature, stating that Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu remains committed to his duties at the House of Representatives and has no immediate plans to announce his political intentions. He stressed that Kalu’s decisions regarding his future would be made in consultation with his political family and broader support network.
“It is far too early for anyone to assume that the Deputy Speaker is contemplating his 2027 ambition. He is a strong believer in divine timing and collective decision-making within his political circle,” Chukwu explained.
A Focus on Legislative Excellence
According to Chukwu, the Deputy Speaker’s primary focus is to excel in his current role and contribute meaningfully to the legislative agenda of the 10th Assembly. Any decision regarding his political future, Chukwu assured, would be made with careful consideration and broad consultation.
“The Deputy Speaker’s top priority is ensuring success in the significant office he now holds. His ambition for the future, if any, will be unveiled after due consultation and at the right time,” Chukwu concluded.
Public Urged to Disregard Misinformation
Chukwu called on members of the public to treat the circulating rumors as baseless and unfounded. He reiterated that the Deputy Speaker remains dedicated to his legislative duties and has no intention of engaging in divisive politics.
For now, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu is fully focused on delivering on his mandate and ensuring that his contributions positively impact his constituents and the nation at large.
