Nigeria Records 100 Deaths, N67.1 Billion Loss to Fire Outbreaks in 2024

The Federal Fire Service has revealed that Nigeria suffered significant losses due to fire outbreaks in 2024. According to the service, 100 lives were lost, and properties worth N67.1 billion were destroyed in various fire incidents across the country.

However, the service also reported some positive outcomes, stating that 30,890 lives and properties worth N1.94 trillion were saved from destruction. Controller General Abdulganiyu Jaji attributed many of the incidents to negligence and non-compliance with safety regulations.

Jaji urged Nigerians to exercise caution during the harmattan period, which is prone to fire outbreaks. He also emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols, particularly for operators of fuel stations, gas refilling plants, and users of gas cylinders.

Looking ahead to 2025, the Federal Fire Service has pledged to improve public safety, enhance response times, and leverage advanced technology. The service plans to raise awareness and adopt cutting-edge technologies, such as the National Fire Detection and Alarm System and the Fire Alarm App, N-Alert.

These efforts aim to enhance operational efficiency and ensure better service delivery. The Federal Fire Service has reassured the public of its dedication to its mandate, prioritizing public trust and ensuring that investments in fire safety yield commendable results.
