US President-elect, Donald Trump has announced plans for a meeting with 🇷🇺 Russian President Vladimir Putin, though no timeline has been provided. Speaking at Mar-a-Lago, Trump said, “He wants to meet too and we are setting it up.”
Russian news agency Tass cited Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, stating the US has not formally requested a meeting. Trump, who takes office on 20 January, has pledged to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine and has voiced scepticism about continued US military and financial support for Kyiv.
“President Putin wants to meet,” Trump reiterated on Thursday. “He has said that even publicly and we have to get that war over with. That’s a bloody mess.”
For his second administration, Trump has nominated Keith Kellogg, a former national security adviser and retired lieutenant-general, as special envoy to Ukraine and Russia. Kellogg outlined his proposals for ending the war in a 2023 paper for the pro-Trump America First Policy Institute.
Kellogg suggested that further US aid to Ukraine should be contingent upon its willingness to engage in peace talks with Moscow.
