Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has reiterated his administration’s dedication to clearing gratuity liabilities for state retirees. Speaking at the presentation of cheques and payment of backlog of gratuities to state retirees on Monday, Yahaya disclosed that his administration has made significant progress in settling the inherited debt.
Out of the ₦21 billion inherited from previous administrations, Yahaya’s administration has cleared ₦17.2 billion, leaving a balance of ₦19 billion for both state and local government retirees ¹. The governor acknowledged the increasing burden of gratuity obligations as civil servants exit the service.
Yahaya reaffirmed his commitment to leaving no liabilities behind, aiming to clear all gratuity obligations before the end of his tenure in 2027. He emphasized the importance of accountability and compassion, ensuring that no retiree is left without their rightful benefits.
The governor also highlighted his administration’s efforts to enhance the welfare of civil servants, including the recent implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for state government workers. This move aims to shield civil servants from economic challenges, particularly after the fuel subsidy removal.
Yahaya commended labour unions, retiree associations, and other stakeholders for their cooperation and constructive dialogue throughout the process. Their support has been instrumental in guiding reforms and prioritizing civil servants’ welfare.
