The family of Sunday Morakinyo, one of the individuals convicted in the infamous “death-for-fowl” case in Osun State, has called on the government and compassionate individuals for assistance in addressing his mental health challenges.
Morakinyo, arrested in November 2010 for allegedly stealing fowls and eggs in Oyan, Osun State, was reportedly in stable mental health before his arrest. However, his family claims he developed a mental illness during his incarceration, which they attribute to severe torture.
In 2013, Morakinyo and his co-accused, Segun Olowookere, were arraigned before Justice Jide Falola of the Osun State High Court on charges of conspiracy, robbery, and stealing. They were convicted and sentenced to death in December 2014.
Following public outcry, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke pardoned both men last week. Upon his release, Morakinyo returned home with a mental disorder, leaving his family devastated.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Morakinyo’s uncle, Ojo Olaide, denied claims that the ex-convict had a prior mental illness. He alleged that the police fabricated confessions and implicated Morakinyo and Olowookere in the crime.
“Our children were falsely accused. The real culprits were sent to welfare homes and later released, yet Sunday and Segun were convicted,” Olaide said.
The family noticed changes in Morakinyo’s mental condition during his time at the Ilesa Correctional Centre. Olaide explained that he often found torn clothes during visits and was informed of severe torture inflicted on his nephew.
Expressing gratitude to Governor Adeleke for the pardon, Olaide appealed for further assistance to rehabilitate Morakinyo. “We appreciate the governor’s gesture, but we need help treating Sunday’s condition and aiding his recovery. We plan to take him to the hospital soon,” he said.
The family remains hopeful that support from the government and kind-hearted individuals will help Morakinyo regain his mental stability and reintegrate into society.
