Sowore Slams Nigerian Government Over Police Pension

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the Nigerian government’s treatment of its workers, particularly police officers. Sowore’s outrage was sparked by a viral video featuring retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, Esther Marcus, who alleged that she received a meager N1.7 million gratuity and N40,000 monthly pension after serving for 35 years.

Sowore expressed his dismay on X.com, questioning how someone who dedicated 35 years of service could be paid such a small amount. He highlighted the stark contrast between the pension paid to police officers and the salaries enjoyed by lawmakers, stating that Nigeria “does nothing but evil to its workers.” Sowore noted that senators take home N29 million per month, while police officers, who risk their lives daily, are paid peanuts.

The activist’s comments were met with support from social media users, including Tony, who tweeted that the welfare of police officers is one of the country’s biggest problems. Gbemisola also commented, criticizing the police force for not fighting for their rights and instead “worshiping those who pay them peanuts.”

This incident has shed light on the poor treatment of Nigerian police officers, who face numerous challenges, including inadequate resources, corruption, and lack of training. The Nigeria Police Force has a crucial role in maintaining law and order, but their effectiveness is hindered by these challenges.
