Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Sector 3, in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), intercepted a suspected terrorist courier transporting materials believed to be for manufacturing Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The interception occurred at the entrance to Gubio Local Government Area in Borno State.
Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Chief Military Information Officer at MNJTF HQ in N’Djamena, Chad, revealed this in a statement on Friday, January 3, 2025.
The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Murktar Alhaji Chari, was arrested on Thursday, January 2, during a counter-terrorism operation. According to the statement, Chari admitted to delivering the materials to Damasak town in Mobbar Local Government Area for an intended attack on MNJTF troops.
“The intercepted materials included four empty 12kg cylinders, one empty 6kg cylinder, two carburetor gas canisters, two pressure regulators and a hose,” the statement read.
Intelligence reports suggested these materials were meant for a group planning a retaliatory attack after suffering significant losses, including the death of several members and the seizure of a weapons cache.
“The timely interception of this courier and the recovery of these materials have effectively disrupted a potential terrorist attack and dealt a significant blow to the operational capabilities of the terrorist group.”
The suspect is in custody and cooperating with ongoing investigations.
Major General Ibrahim Ali, Force Commander of MNJTF, praised the troops and CJTF for their vigilance and professionalism, emphasizing the MNJTF’s commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring regional safety.
