Edo State Police Command has arrested a 55-year-old man, Osaro Ahuwa, for allegedly setting fire to the house of his estranged wife, Uyi Tina, on New Year’s Day.
The incident occurred in Benin City, a day after Tina, an Italy-based businesswoman, returned to Nigeria. Reports indicate that Ahuwa, angered by Tina’s refusal to let him into her home and her confirmation that their relationship was over—following the return of his bride price in April 2024—took drastic action.
According to a statement by the police spokesperson, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, Ahuwa smashed the glass windows of Tina’s home, poured petrol into the apartment, and ignited it with a lighter.
The distress call came from Tina’s sister, Osariten Terecy, who reported the attack. Tina, who was asleep when the fire started, managed to escape but sustained burns. Tragically, the house, along with all its contents, £4,000 cash, and her Lexus RX 330 vehicle, was completely destroyed.
The police also apprehended Ahuwa’s alleged accomplice, Odaro Oviarobo, said to be the victim’s brother. Both suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue.
The police have reassured the public of their commitment to ensuring justice for the victim and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
