Seven people, including five local vigilantes and two civilians, were killed in a tragic attack by gunmen in Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State.
The attack occurred on Monday, December 30, disrupting preparations for a burial ceremony planned for January 2. According to reports, the assailants opened fire on a compound where arrangements for the event were ongoing. Two unarmed civilians at the venue and members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG) stationed near the Local Government Headquarters were among the casualties.
Anambra State Police Command spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, stating that the gunmen launched their attack around 11:20 a.m., firing sporadically before targeting a security observation post near the express road.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, initiated a manhunt for the attackers and conducted an on-site assessment of the crime scene. He assured residents of the police’s dedication to bringing the perpetrators to justice, expressing condolences to the victims’ families and the Ihiala community.
One victim was rescued during the attack and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital. Residents of the area remain in shock, calling for stronger security measures to prevent future violence. The police have urged the public to provide information that could aid in identifying and apprehending the gunmen.
Soludo Reacts with N10m Bounty
Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has placed a N10 million bounty on each suspect involved in the attack. During a condolence visit to the family of one of the victims, Bridget Akanma Onuchukwu, in Umuike, Ubahuekwem Ihiala, Soludo expressed his sorrow and pledged to ensure justice is served.
“We will not rest until the perpetrators of this heinous crime are apprehended. All of them will pay for it,” Soludo said.
He also reassured residents that enhanced security measures for Ihiala would be unveiled soon, emphasizing the government’s commitment to restoring peace and safety in the area.
