Nigerian Military Eliminates 10,937 Terrorists in 2024, Detains 12,538

The Nigerian Armed Forces have recorded remarkable achievements in their fight against terrorism in 2024, neutralizing 10,937 terrorists and arresting 12,538 individuals involved in various criminal activities. This was revealed by Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, during the Annual Review of Joint Task Force Operational Activities held in Abuja, the capital city. Major General Buba attributed these successes to persistent efforts aimed at degrading the operational and fighting capacities of terrorist groups. The Armed Forces also rescued 7,063 hostages during numerous military operations, demonstrating their commitment to protecting civilian lives.

In addition to these efforts, the military recovered an impressive arsenal of 8,815 weapons, including 4,332 AK-47 rifles, 1,244 locally fabricated guns, 838 Dane guns, and 259 pump-action guns. Furthermore, they seized 228,004 rounds of ammunition, which included 128,496 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 45,445 rounds of 7.62mm NATO rounds, 5,103 cartridges, and 29,176 assorted rounds. Anti-oil theft operations also yielded substantial results, with the recovery of 56,223,002 liters of stolen crude oil, 9,735,836 liters of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), 95,595 liters of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK), and 156,527 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Over 1,000 terrorist leaders, commanders, and combatants were neutralized in the course of the year, including notorious figures such as Dutse Mainasara Idda, Mallam Saleh Umaru, Mohammed Amadu, Chinemerem (known as Bam Bam), Jeremiah Uzuoma (known as Escoba), Tochukwu Awo (known as Ojoto), and Egwuatu. The Armed Forces also disrupted oil theft operations, preventing economic losses estimated at over ₦68 billion (₦68,453,376,040.00). According to Major General Buba, the military’s sustained efforts have marked a turning point in the fight against terrorism, with significant expectations for further success in 2025.

The Armed Forces emphasized the need for collaboration with neighboring countries and regional organizations to combat terrorism effectively. They called on citizens to actively participate in the fight, stressing that national security is a collective responsibility. During the event, a moment of silence was observed to honor the officers and personnel who lost their lives defending Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Looking ahead to 2025, Major General Buba assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces remain highly motivated and committed to intensifying their operations. He pledged that the military would go to great lengths to ensure sustained peace and security, delivering tangible benefits to citizens and further advancing the fight against terrorism.
