The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a $50,000 fine on the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) and mandated that Libya plays two matches without spectators.
In a statement released on Sunday, CAF cited “misconduct” during and after the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Benin in Tripoli on November 18.
Gernot Rohr, head coach of Benin’s national team, the Cheetahs, recounted being assaulted alongside his players by Libyan police “with batons” after the match, which ended 0-0. The draw secured Benin’s qualification for the 2025 AFCON, while Libya remained at the bottom of their group, failing to qualify.
Rohr stated that Libyan authorities and fans attacked the Squirrels after the final whistle. Videos circulated online showed injured Benin players treating wounds with ice packs following the incident in their dressing room.
CAF’s disciplinary board found the LFF guilty of breaching articles 82 and 151 of its disciplinary code, citing improper conduct by supporters and officials.
This recent sanction follows a similar penalty three months ago. Libya was fined $50,000 during the Super Eagles’ AFCON qualification campaign due to poor treatment of the Nigerian team.
Before a scheduled game in Benghazi, Nigeria’s flight was redirected to Al Abaq airport, where the team was detained for over 20 hours without food or water. Libya eventually forfeited the match, resulting in Nigeria being awarded three points and three goals.
The disciplinary measures underscore CAF’s intolerance for such behavior, emphasizing the need for improved sportsmanship and safety during international fixtures.
