Awka – In the aftermath of the devastating stampede in Okija that claimed 22 lives during a rice distribution event last Saturday, the Obijackson Foundation and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Sir Paul Chukwuma, have canceled their planned Christmas activities out of respect for the victims.
Chief Ernest Obiejesi, Chairman of the Obijackson Foundation, announced the cancellation of the organization’s annual children’s Christmas celebration in Okija. In a heartfelt statement, the foundation explained the decision as a necessary step toward prioritizing the community’s healing.
“Due to the heartbreaking events surrounding the rice sharing tragedy, the Obijackson Foundation has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Christmas celebration for Okija children,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with those affected, and we believe it is vital to focus on healing and support for the community at this time. We look forward to resuming our work for the well-being of Okija in the new year.”
Similarly, Sir Paul Chukwuma announced the suspension of his Christmas palliatives distribution, emphasizing the need for solemn reflection and community solidarity.
“We are in mourning,” Chukwuma said in a statement. “I have directed my campaign council to suspend the physical distribution of Christmas gifts to communities for now and devise a strategy with minimum discomfort to beneficiaries. The tragedy at Okija has brought untold grief to Anambra people during this season of love.”
He reaffirmed his belief in Anambra’s resilience, stating, “This incident must not break the Anambra spirit. Our communal bond, legendary philanthropy, and commitment to using wealth to bring relief and happiness to others must endure.”
Chukwuma urged affluent Anambra indigenes to remain steadfast in their support for the community, suggesting innovative approaches to outreach during the festive season. He also called for introspection to ensure that such tragedies are prevented in the future.
“The mystery of life can lead well-intentioned efforts to unexpected outcomes. Let us collectively reflect, pray for the peaceful repose of the souls lost, and support their loved ones,” Chukwuma added.
Both Obiejesi and Chukwuma extended their condolences to the families affected by the tragedy, pledging prayers and continued efforts to foster healing in the community.
