The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, has underscored the critical importance of stakeholder collaboration and the adoption of advanced technological tools in combating insecurity in Nigeria. Speaking during the commissioning of the newly built Ogbona Divisional Police Headquarters and a state-of-the-art ICT security command and control center in Ogbona, Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State, the IGP emphasized the necessity of modern, high-tech policing methods to address the challenges of contemporary security threats.
Represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 5 Benin, AIG Arungwa Nwaziue Udo, Dr. Egbetokun commended the efforts of the Ogbona Youth Forum (OYF), the community group responsible for the construction and equipping of the facility. The project, which was made possible through the support of OYF’s patron, Mr. Peter Omoh Dunia, Executive Director of Inter-Atlas Synergy Limited, also saw the donation of a police patrol vehicle and four motorcycles to enhance the operational capabilities of the Nigeria Police Force in the region.
During his remarks, the IGP highlighted the indispensable role of technology in modern policing, particularly in the areas of tracking and monitoring individuals with criminal intentions. He noted that policing is a shared responsibility and called on the public to sustain their support in the fight against insecurity.
“We are living in a modern world, and high-tech policing is inevitable. The public’s sustained support is essential, as policing is everybody’s business,” Egbetokun stated. “Community efforts in this regard will not go in vain.”
The patron of the project, Mr. Peter Omoh Dunia, urged the Nigeria Police to integrate Information and Communications Technology (ICT) into their security operations. He emphasized the transformative potential of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in addressing local security concerns and fostering peace and development.
“Security is the bedrock of development,” Dunia stated. “Without peace, no society can thrive, businesses cannot flourish, and families cannot prosper. This new police station is a symbol of hope, unity, and progress, equipped with modern facilities to enhance the police force’s effectiveness in safeguarding lives and property.”
National President of the Ogbona Youth Forum (OYF), Mr. Paulinus Eleta, expressed optimism that the facility would significantly contribute to improving security in Edo North, a region grappling with threats such as kidnapping. He thanked all stakeholders who contributed to making the project a reality, noting that community-driven efforts are vital for addressing local challenges.
Presiding over the event, Chief Dan Orbih, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South South region, called for stronger collaboration between the police and the public to foster a more secure and peaceful environment. Chief Orbih emphasized that security is a shared responsibility and that building trust between the police and local communities is essential for achieving lasting peace.
The inauguration of the ultra-modern police headquarters and ICT command center is seen as a significant milestone in the quest for enhanced security in the area. It also demonstrates the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and local communities in addressing pressing security concerns.
