Port Harcourt Refinery Fully Operational, NNPCL Debunks Shutdown Rumors

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has categorically dismissed reports claiming the Port Harcourt Refinery has been shut down. The company confirmed that the facility, which was re-streamed two months ago, remains fully operational, with ongoing loading activities to ensure a steady supply of petroleum products.

In a statement issued on Saturday by its spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, and made available to Hobnob News, the NNPCL described the reports as false and misleading. The company stated that the operational status of the refinery had been thoroughly verified by former Group Managing Directors of NNPCL during a recent inspection visit, dispelling any doubts about its functionality.

“The attention of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has been drawn to reports in a section of the media alleging that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery, which was re-streamed two months ago, has been shut down.

“We wish to clarify that such reports are totally false as the refinery is fully operational, as verified a few days ago by former Group Managing Directors of NNPC. Preparation for the day’s loading operation is currently ongoing,” the statement read.

The Port Harcourt Refinery, one of Nigeria’s key petroleum processing facilities, underwent significant rehabilitation before being brought back online. It currently operates at a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day. The NNPCL emphasized that lifting operations at the facility are ongoing, underscoring its pivotal role in stabilizing fuel supply in the country.

NNPCL urged Nigerians to disregard the false reports, describing them as deliberate attempts by unscrupulous individuals to incite panic, create artificial scarcity, and exploit the public. The company reassured citizens that it remains committed to ensuring the seamless operation of its facilities and maintaining transparency in its activities.

The statement further highlighted NNPCL’s focus on meeting the nation’s energy needs, particularly in the wake of increased demand during the festive season. “Our priority is to sustain operations and avoid any disruptions in the supply chain. Nigerians can be assured of our dedication to this mission,” the statement added.

This clarification comes amidst concerns about fuel availability, with speculation about potential scarcity fueled by the false shutdown narrative. The NNPCL reiterated that such rumors are entirely unfounded and aimed at creating unnecessary tension.

As the country’s foremost energy provider, NNPCL called on the media to ensure accurate reporting and to verify facts before publishing news that could potentially mislead the public and cause unwarranted anxiety.

With the Port Harcourt Refinery fully operational, NNPCL assured Nigerians of its readiness to meet the nation’s petroleum demands, working diligently to strengthen energy security and support economic stability.
