The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft has successfully intercepted 19 suspected stowaways attempting to illegally migrate to Europe aboard vessels in Lagos State. According to Lieutenant Hussaini Ibrahim, Base Information Officer, the stowaways had boarded the vessels under cover of darkness, concealing themselves in the rudder compartments .
The Falcon Eye Alignment, a Maritime Domain Awareness Facility, played a crucial role in the interception, successfully vectoring the NNS Beecroft Quick Response Team (QRT) to intercept 15 suspected stowaways at Lagos fairway buoy. The remaining four suspects were apprehended onboard MT MCC YANBU, thanks to credible intelligence provided by NNS Beecroft personnel deployed for escort duties.
The prompt response of the Quick Response Team saved the stowaways from life-threatening situations during the long voyage. The Nigerian Navy emphasized the security threats posed by stowaways, including smuggling, piracy, and human trafficking.
The first 15 suspected stowaways were handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service on Friday, December 20, 2024, for further investigation and necessary action. The remaining four suspects will be handed over as soon as possible. The NNS Beecroft has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure maritime environment in Lagos.
