The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Kara Bridge was brought to a standstill early Wednesday morning following a tragic multiple-vehicle crash that claimed the life of an unidentified adult male. The incident, which occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m., involved a truck carrying steel coils and a 40-foot container truck, causing severe disruptions to vehicular and pedestrian movement in the area.
According to Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the articulated truck lost control while attempting to avoid a collision with the detached 40-foot container on the roadway. This led to the truck overturning and discharging its cargo of steel coils onto the expressway.
“An unidentified adult male driver lost his life in the incident, and his body was removed before the agency’s response team arrived,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed.
The crash completely obstructed vehicular movement in both directions of the expressway, trapping numerous motorists in gridlock that extended for hours. Emergency responders, including personnel from LASEMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police, and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), swiftly mobilized to the scene to manage the situation.
Recovery Efforts and Alternative Routes
The LASEMA response team, alongside other agencies, coordinated recovery efforts to clear the wreckage and reopen the expressway to traffic. Diversions were set up to alleviate the congestion, with motorists advised to use alternative routes such as Ikorodu Road, Sagamu Road, and the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
As of 12:00 p.m., the obstructions had been cleared, and traffic flow was gradually being restored. However, a significant backlog of vehicles persisted, continuing to cause delays for commuters.
The crash underscores the need for enhanced safety measures and stricter enforcement of regulations governing heavy-duty vehicles on Nigeria’s highways. Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu reiterated the importance of vigilance among motorists and adherence to road safety protocols to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a critical transportation artery connecting Lagos to other parts of the country, has experienced similar disruptions in the past, highlighting the urgency for improved infrastructure and safety interventions.
