NEMA Launches Nationwide Fire Safety Campaign Targeting Tanker Drivers, Market Associations, and Grassroots Volunteers

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has initiated a comprehensive nationwide fire safety sensitization campaign to address the increasing risk of fire outbreaks during the harmattan season. This proactive measure, implemented through its Zonal Territorial and Operations Offices, aims to equip communities with the knowledge and tools necessary to prevent and manage fire-related emergencies.

The campaign is being carried out in collaboration with the Federal and State Fire Services and is designed to engage critical stakeholders, including tanker drivers, market associations, local businesses, and grassroots volunteers. These groups are being prioritized due to their roles in activities that can pose fire risks.

Empowering Tanker Drivers and Market Associations

A key component of the initiative focuses on educating tanker drivers on fire safety protocols. NEMA is providing training on preventive practices, emergency response techniques, and safe handling procedures to reduce the likelihood of fire incidents. Market leaders and associations are also being engaged to implement fire prevention strategies within marketplaces, where fires can have devastating effects on property and livelihoods.

The agency emphasized that the harmattan season presents unique challenges, with heightened fire risks due to dry weather conditions and increased flammable debris. The Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, stressed the urgency of taking proactive measures to mitigate these risks.

“Preventing fire outbreaks is not just a responsibility for emergency responders but a shared obligation. This campaign is part of our commitment to creating a culture of disaster prevention that safeguards lives, properties, and livelihoods,” Umar stated.

Grassroots Training Through Emergency Management Volunteers

In addition to engaging larger associations, NEMA is focusing on grassroots education by training Emergency Management Volunteers (EMVs). These volunteers will receive practical instruction in fire prevention and management techniques, enabling them to act as first responders in their communities. This approach is aimed at addressing fire emergencies promptly and effectively, especially in rural areas where professional emergency services may not be readily available.

Umar highlighted the importance of involving local communities, saying, “We believe that empowering individuals at the grassroots level is critical to reducing the frequency and impact of fire incidents. These volunteers will serve as the backbone of our community-level fire prevention efforts.”

A Nationwide Call for Collective Responsibility

The nationwide campaign also serves as a call to action for all Nigerians to embrace a collective responsibility for disaster prevention. NEMA is advocating adherence to fire safety guidelines and increased awareness of fire hazards. The agency underscored the importance of timely responses to disaster warnings, proper maintenance of electrical equipment, and safe storage of flammable materials.

“This initiative reaffirms our dedication to building resilient communities through prevention, training, and collaborative action,” Umar added. “By working together with tanker drivers, market associations, and grassroots volunteers, we can significantly reduce the occurrence and impact of fire outbreaks during this critical period.”

Building Resilient Communities

NEMA’s campaign reflects its commitment to fostering disaster-resilient communities across Nigeria. With a focus on prevention, preparedness, and response, the agency is taking significant strides in minimizing fire-related risks during the harmattan season.

As part of this ongoing effort, NEMA urges all citizens to adopt fire safety practices, remain vigilant, and support the agency’s initiatives to protect lives and property. Hobnob News will continue to monitor and report on the impact of this important campaign.
