In a life-changing initiative, 50 women in Gombe State received free surgeries to treat vesico-vaginal fistulas (VVF), thanks to a collaboration between the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Norwegian government, and Fistula Foundation Nigeria (FFN).
The surgeries, conducted at Gombe Specialist Hospital, aimed to alleviate the debilitating effects of VVF—a condition caused by obstructed labor, early marriages, and limited access to healthcare, leading to constant urinary incontinence and significant social challenges for women, particularly in northern Nigeria.
Lead surgeon Dr. Sa’ad Idris lauded the success of the operations, while FFN representative Ibrahim Abubakar highlighted the transformative impact of the program. Dr. Garba Mohamed, a program officer, stressed the importance of post-surgery care for the beneficiaries to ensure a complete recovery.
This initiative has not only restored health but also renewed hope for women long burdened by the condition.
