The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has issued new guidelines for the concessional deployment or relocation of married female corps members, eliminating the requirement for them to adopt their spouse’s surname. This directive, dated November 25, 2024, was communicated through an official circular to all State Coordinators by the NYSC Headquarters.
The circular, titled “Review of Criteria for Concessional Deployment/Relocation Approval for Married Female Corps Members,” highlights a significant change in policy. “Management has approved the review of criteria for the approval of concessional deployment/relocation of married female corps members,” wrote Abubakar Mohammed, Director of Corps Mobilization, on behalf of the NYSC Director-General.
Under the revised guidelines, married female corps members can now request relocation without the need to change their maiden name to their spouse’s name. “Changing a maiden name to that of a spouse is no longer a requirement for the approval of such requests,” the circular states. However, all other requirements for relocation remain unchanged.
The directive further instructs State and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Coordinators to ensure full compliance, while Area Office Directors are tasked with monitoring implementation.
This move is seen as an effort to simplify the relocation process for married female corps members, fostering greater flexibility in accommodating personal circumstances. The NYSC hopes the changes will be implemented effectively across all states.
