A female National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) member, Nafisa Umar-Hassan, has taken a significant step in empowering women in Katsina State by training 20 of them in poultry farming and feed production. This initiative is part of her Community Development Service (CDS) project.
According to the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Prof. Ahmed Bakori, the beneficiaries underwent training on best agronomic practices in poultry production, management, and market linkages. The commissioner commended Umar-Hassan for her efforts, noting that the training would have a positive impact on the women and their communities.
The state Coordinator of the Fadama Project, Mohammed Bello, revealed that his office collaborated with Umar-Hassan to support the initiative. He stated that the project’s objectives aligned with the corps member’s initiative, which convinced him to provide support.
Umar-Hassan’s NYSC journey has exposed her to various lifestyles in her host community and the state. She commended the women for their commitment, saying they hardly make decisions without their husbands’ permission. After creating awareness among the women, she convinced 20 of them to participate in the training.
Each beneficiary received a plastic drinker, a bag of feed, a feeding tray, 25-day-old chickens, and a variety of drugs for poultry production and sustenance. Umar-Hassan expressed gratitude to the state Commissioner for Agriculture, other executive council members, and philanthropists for their support in raising funds to provide the required materials for empowerment.
This initiative is a testament to the positive impact that NYSC members can have on their host communities. Umar-Hassan’s efforts have not only empowered women in poultry farming and feed production but have also demonstrated the importance of community development projects in promoting economic growth and sustainability.
