The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has commended the Finnish Police for arresting separatist leader Simon Ekpa, describing it as a significant victory in the fight against terrorism.
In a statement, Director of Defence Information Brig Gen Tukur Gusau revealed that Chief of Defence Staff Gen Chris Musa is pleased with Ekpa’s trial and hopes it will pave the way for his extradition to Nigeria to face justice.
Ekpa, a factional leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was declared wanted by the DHQ in March 2024, along with 96 others, for terrorism, violent extremism, and secessionist threats against Nigeria. He is believed to be behind the insecurity in the South-east region.
The DHQ’s reaction to Ekpa’s arrest marks a significant development in the country’s efforts to address secessionist threats and promote national security.
