Nigeria’s Finance Ministry Under Fire for Spending N55 Million on Sendforth Party

The Federal Ministry of Finance is facing criticism for spending N55 million on a sendforth party for Udo Okonkwo Ekanem, the former permanent secretary of special duties. The payment was made into the personal account of Unoh Omolara on September 13, 2024.

According to the payment description, the event was held at Transcorp Hilton hotels on September 6, 2024. The ministry’s website confirmed the event, stating it was in appreciation of Ekanem’s outstanding commitment.

However, this expenditure has raised concerns about the management of government resources. Critics point out that this amount is twice the N28.3 million spent on drilling 28 boreholes in Jigawa State.

The Federal Ministry of Finance has a history of overseeing significant financial projects and initiatives . However, incidents like this undermine trust in the government’s commitment to accountability and transparency.

As Nigeria continues to navigate economic challenges, citizens expect more responsible management of public funds. The Finance Ministry must address these concerns and demonstrate greater transparency in its expenditures.
