In a recent development, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, has emerged as the National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) without opposition. This election took place during the Union’s Quadrennial Delegate Conference for Zone 2 Council in Osogbo, Osun State.
The Ondo State Chairman of the Union nominated MC Oluomo for the national position, which was seconded by the Ekiti State Chairman. His unanimous election has sparked discussions about his close ties with President Bola Tinubu. MC Oluomo has publicly declared his loyalty to Tinubu, stating that he would support whatever the President wanted.
MC Oluomo’s leadership has been marred by controversy, particularly during the 2023 Lagos governorship election. He was criticized for threatening Igbo people to stay home if they didn’t vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates. Although the Nigerian Police Force denounced his actions, MC Oluomo remains unpunished.
In his acceptance speech, MC Oluomo pleaded for forgiveness for past wrongdoings and urged Union members to unite. “I have forgiven everyone that offends me, and I wish those I offended would forgive me as well.” He emphasized the importance of preserving the Union and protecting their livelihood.
MC Oluomo’s election as NURTW National President has raised questions about the influence of politics in Union leadership and the potential implications for Nigeria’s transportation sector.
