Edo State Governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has raised an alarm regarding the whereabouts of outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki, claiming he has fled Nigeria through land borders ahead of his tenure expiration. Obaseki’s immunity is set to expire on Tuesday when Okpebholo is sworn into office.
According to Okpebholo’s media aide, Godspower Inegbe, Obaseki allegedly fled Benin City, the state capital, on Friday using a disguised bus, abandoning governance in the state . This move is believed to be an attempt to evade the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which Obaseki claims is planning to arrest him after his tenure ends.
Okpebholo has accused Obaseki of misappropriating public funds and making false claims to shift attention away from his alleged plan to leave the country . The governor-elect maintains that he won the September 21 governorship election convincingly and that the tribunal will soon validate his claims.
The situation in Edo State remains tense as the transition of power approaches. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
