A Russian court has determined that Google owes approximately $20 decillion in fines for blocking Russian media content. This figure translates to $20 trillion trillion trillion.
For perspective, Google’s market value is around $2 trillion, while the World Bank estimates global GDP at roughly $100 trillion. This ruling implies that Google is being ordered to pay more than the total monetary value available on Earth.
The court’s absurd fine stems from actions taken when Google restricted the YouTube channels of Russian media outlets Tsargrad and RIA FAN following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The court argued that this action violated free speech rights and, after winning a lawsuit against the tech giant, imposed an initial fine of 100,000 rubles, warning that the penalty would double each day. Four years later, this fine has ballooned to the ludicrous amount of $20 decillion.
As pointed out by Gizmodo’s Todd Feathers, “At that rate, it will take roughly 219 weeks before Google owes $1 googol (1 followed by 100 zeros).”
Although Google had a division in Russia until 2022, they have since closed it and relocated their Russian employees. However, Russian citizens can still access Google and YouTube services.
Given the circumstances, Google is unlikely to be concerned about the fine; after all, the company no longer maintains a presence in Russia. With four years of accumulated fines already in place, it appears Google has no plans to pay even a fraction of this amount, especially considering the fines have escalated to such absurd levels.
