The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized the recent recruitment of 4,000 teachers by the outgoing administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki, calling it a tactic to hinder the incoming government of Senator Monday Okpebholo. The APC claims this last-minute action confirms its belief that Governor Obaseki’s EdoBest educational project was a “hoax” designed for “self-interest” rather than the benefit of Edo’s educational system.
According to a statement by Prince Kassim Afegbua, a member of the APC Transition Committee, “Governor Obaseki used the project for his self-interest; playing with the future of our children.” The party further accused the governor of neglecting teacher recruitment throughout his administration, suggesting his sudden action at the end of his term is a “political ploy” to disrupt the incoming administration.
The APC also urged those allegedly recruited to “disregard the exercise,” as they consider it part of Obaseki’s strategy to use the EdoBest project to “defraud the citizens, the World Bank, and other donor agencies.” Afegbua argued that if Obaseki truly had the state’s interest at heart, recruitment efforts would have occurred earlier.
In contrast, the APC assures that Senator Okpebholo’s administration will prioritize transparency and “follow due process” in teacher recruitment, focusing on improving Edo’s educational sector “without a partisan mind.” The statement concluded by encouraging citizens to support the incoming administration and “reflect on the misdeeds of the outgoing government.”
