The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is bracing for a supremacy battle as the camps of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike re-strategize ahead of the rescheduled National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on November 28.
Wike, addressing his supporters in Port-Harcourt, vowed to continue being “a problem” for Atiku, Obi, and opposing PDP governors, as well as President Bola Tinubu ¹. His loyalists have been holding meetings in Abuja and Port-Harcourt to consolidate court victories in the intra-party power struggle.
The NEC meeting’s postponement to November is seen as advantageous for Wike’s camp, allowing Acting National Chairman Amb. Umar Damagum to remain in office longer. Damagum’s continued leadership is crucial, especially after a Federal High Court in Abuja restrained the NEC and Board of Trustees from removing him.
In contrast, the Atiku camp is struggling to recover from former National Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu’s resignation and the stalled efforts to replace him with a North Central candidate. The Atiku camp seeks punishment for those who sabotaged the party in the last election, fueling tensions within the PDP .
PDP governors, major financiers of the party, are poised to seize control of the party’s structures, potentially undermining Atiku and Wike’s influence. They believe their significant contributions warrant control, with Governor Bala Mohammed’s presidential ambitions and other governors’ interests at play.
