Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed his preference for being a Nigerian rather than a member of the proposed Oodua Republic. He made this statement while receiving a delegation of the League of Northern Democrats, led by Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, at his Abeokuta residence.
Obasanjo emphasized the need to prioritize national interest over regional affiliations, stating, “Where I was born should not be the enemy of my being a Nigerian.” He advocated for merit-based leadership selection, considering capacity and ability to deliver, rather than geopolitical zone.
The former president identified pre-independence regionalism as the root of Nigeria’s prolonged lack of cohesion. He urged Nigerians to put the past behind and work towards greatness, emphasizing the importance of unity, credible leadership, and righteousness in politics.
Obasanjo expressed optimism about Nigeria’s salvaging prospects, provided everyone unites and works together. He reaffirmed his commitment to Pan-Africanism, patriotism, and nationalistic Nigerian values, proudly identifying as a member of the black race.
Shekarau, echoing Obasanjo’s sentiments, stressed the urgent need for unity and righteous leadership in Nigerian politics. The League of Northern Democrats aims to contribute to national development across the entire federation, not just the northern region ¹.
