Wike Distances Himself from Damagum Amid PDP Crisis

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has made a surprising revelation about his relationship with Umar Ilyas Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party. Wike stated that he and Damagum are not friends, citing a lack of support from Damagum in the past. This announcement comes at a time of heightened tensions within the PDP, as rival factions prepare for the party’s National Executive Committee meeting.

The meeting aims to address the ongoing internal crisis that has divided the party. The crisis has been fueled by allegations of violations of the party’s zoning and office-sharing policies by Atiku Abubakar’s faction. The pro-Atiku faction recently suspended Damagum and National Secretary Sam Anyanwu, who are seen as sympathetic to Wike.

Wike clarified his stance on Damagum during a speech to his supporters and PDP members in Port Harcourt, stating that his only interest was to see Damagum complete the remaining tenure of former chairman Iyorchia Ayu. However, Wike expressed distrust towards Damagum, suggesting that he had seen something that made him question Damagum’s reliability.

The internal conflict within the PDP has been escalating, with party members and leaders expressing concerns about the party’s ability to maintain cohesion. The crisis has also drawn criticism from external observers, with some describing the PDP as “dead” due to its internal disarray and loss of direction.
