Lagos State Government Raises Alarm Over Flash Flooding Threat

The Lagos State Government has issued a warning about a renewed threat of flash flooding in the state, following Thursday’s heavy rainfall, described as the heaviest in many months. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated that the intensity of rainfall between Wednesday and Thursday caused major river levels to rise, making it difficult for drainage channels to discharge.

Wahab emphasized that data from weather monitoring stations showed Thursday’s average and maximum values were the highest this year. He urged residents in low-lying areas and Ogun River banks to prioritize safety and move upland to prevent loss of lives and properties, as more rainfall is expected this month.

This warning comes after July’s 10-hour downpour grounded business and commercial activities in Lagos and Ogun states, causing flooding that brought down a two-storey building, disrupted vehicular movement, and affected thousands of residents.
