Total Blackout in Nigeria as National Grid Collapses Again

 

Millions of Nigerians have been plunged into darkness as the national electricity grid collapsed again, marking the eighth time this year . The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has attributed the frequent grid collapses to a compounded problem involving stakeholders in the power sector . Nafisat Ali, TCN’s Independent System Operator (ISO) executive director, revealed this during a Senate committee hearing in April.

– _Abuja Disco_: 0 Megawatt

– _Benin Disco_: 0 MW

– _Eko Disco_: 0 MW

– _Enugu Disco_: 0 MW

– _Ibadan Disco_: 0 MW

– _Ikeja Disco_: 0 MW

– _Jos Disco_: 0 MW

– _Kaduna Disco_: 0 MW

– _Kano Disco_: 0 MW

– _Port Harcourt Disco_: 0 MW

– _Yola Disco_: 0 MW

 

The total output currently stands at 0 MW, far below the expected 4,800 MW. This collapse has significant implications for Nigeria’s economy and development, as the country is estimated to lose billions of dollars annually due to power outages ² ³. The outages also harm the quality of life of Nigerians, making it difficult for people to work, study, and run their businesses.
