Yoruba Nation Agitator Dies in Prison Custody

Adejumo Lateef, a defendant in the ongoing trial of 27 individuals accused of attempting to declare the Yoruba Nation, has died in prison custody. Nigerian Correctional Service officials informed the court of Lateef’s passing during a recent arraignment.

Lateef was among those charged with conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, and treason for their involvement in the April 13 invasion of the Oyo State Government Secretariat. The defendants, dressed in army camouflage and armed with rifles and Oodua Nation flags, attempted to take over the Oyo State House of Assembly.

Justice K.B. Olawoyin has adjourned the case to November 6, 8, and 13 for further arraignment and hearing at the Oyo State High Court, Ibadan.
