Edo Governor-Elect, Monday Okpebholo, Pledges Special Attention to Women, Girls

Edo State governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo, has pledged to prioritize women and girls’ empowerment, education, and well-being in his administration. In commemoration of the 2024 International Day of the Girlchild, Okpebholo reassured that his government would focus on enhancing the capacity and well-being of women and the girl-child.

The International Day of the Girlchild, observed on October 11, aims to promote gender equality, education, and healthcare, advocating for girls’ rights and inspiring global action towards a more inclusive future. Okpebholo’s legislative aide on media, Godswill Inegbe, conveyed the governor-elect’s message.

“This year’s theme, ‘Girls’ Vision for the Future,’ emphasizes the urgent need for action and the hopeful aspirations of girls globally amid various challenges such as climate change, conflict, and poverty,” Okpebholo stated.

He outlined his vision for an Edo where girls would actively influence policies, business practices, and research priorities. “I wish to state that my administration will especially focus on child education, especially for girls, through initiatives and policies that will prioritise education and enhance learning in our dear state.”

Okpebholo committed to creating a platform to mobilize efforts to eliminate barriers and foster a supportive environment for girls to thrive. “As a proud father of two beautiful, respectful and intelligent girls, the future of the girl-child occupies a special place in my heart.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to investing quality resources in education, safety, and well-being, enabling girls to attain their full potential and compete fairly with their male counterparts globally. “We’ll create a platform to mobilise efforts to eliminate barriers and foster a more equitable and supportive environment for girls to thrive and contribute to society.”
