In a surprising move, the “integrity” faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the appointment of Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the new acting National Chairman, despite a court order restraining the party from suspending Umar Damagum, the current acting National Chairman.
The crisis within the PDP has escalated, with various factions vying for control. Earlier, a faction loyal to Damagum suspended National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade and National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba on allegations of anti-party activities. However, Ologunagba, representing the “integrity group,” announced the suspension of Damagum and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu on similar grounds.
Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that Damagum should remain the party’s national chairman until the national convention in December 2025. Nevertheless, Ologunagba stated that Mohammed’s appointment aligns with the PDP’s amended constitution from 2017 and takes immediate effect .
The PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting is scheduled for October 24, 2024, and Ologunagba has urged party members to remain focused during this challenging period. The leadership crisis may impact the party’s preparations for upcoming elections.
