More Than 20 Dead, Others Injured as Two Boats Collide in Lagos Lagoon

Tragedy struck on Monday, October 7, 2024, when two unregistered passenger boats collided in the lagoon near Imore Town, Lagos, resulting in injuries and missing persons. The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident.

“A distress call was received at the Ilashe Division around 7:00 PM on Monday. Two unregistered passenger boats, both carrying 16 passengers, allegedly collided in the middle of the lagoon at Imore Town,” said SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer.

The collision caused both boats to capsize, throwing passengers and goods into the water. A response team, including police officers, local divers, and emergency responders, was deployed to the scene.

“So far, 11 passengers have been rescued with injuries and were rushed to Naval Hospital, Navy Town Alakija, for medical attention,” Hundeyin added. The rescue mission is ongoing to recover the bodies of the remaining passengers feared drowned.

The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision and are urging boat operators to adhere to safety regulations, including proper registration of vessels and ensuring passengers wear life jackets.

“As of now, an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collision… We are working closely with all emergency services to bring this unfortunate situation under control,” Hundeyin stated.

The Lagos State Police Command has appealed to the public for any information that could assist in the rescue efforts or investigation.
