Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has expressed concern over Boko Haram insurgents infiltrating Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.
During the resettlement of 3,800 displaced individuals in Konduga, Zulum emphasized the security risks posed by insurgents blending in with displaced populations.
“We can’t tolerate this anymore. Boko Haram insurgents have infiltrated IDP camps, committing atrocities and perpetuating insecurity.”
Zulum urged the Nigerian Army and security forces to secure the camps and protect vulnerable IDPs. He also addressed social issues within the camps, including drug abuse and prostitution among young girls, which undermines the state’s cultural values.
To address the situation, Zulum announced plans to:
– Rebuild communities, including Awulari village in Konduga
– Construct 500 housing units in Sandiya communities before the next rainy season
– Provide financial and material assistance to returnees to re-establish livelihoods
Zulum cautioned returnees against selling the provided resources. The governor’s concerns highlight the need for increased security measures and support for IDPs.
