Obaseki Loses Oredo LG to APC in Stunning Upset

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki suffered a significant setback as his local government, Oredo, was won by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results on Sunday in Benin City, with APC’s Senator Monday Okpebholo securing 30,780 votes. Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obaseki’s preferred candidate, garnered 24,938 votes, while Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party received 5,389 votes.

The PDP has protested the results, alleging manipulation and demanding a recount. Supporters have taken to the streets and INEC’s office to express dissatisfaction. This loss is notable given Ighodalo’s connection to Obaseki.

The outcome has sparked discussions about Obaseki’s influence and the rejection of godfatherism in Edo politics. The development adds complexity to the state’s political landscape.
